What if Operating-System OS Software was a Hardware data like a Gramophone Plate or CDROM. Let us assume the OS is given on a ROM Cartridge. Updates are mailed as New Replaceable Plugin Cartridges. Just Plug out Old OS and Plugin New.

Gadgets as Visual Interface for Process Control

Here is is gadget GUI for Industrial Process control, WebApps. The buttons make a sound and Light up internal LED lamps. Power On-Off control, Digital Timer; Start, Reset Scroll and Select are the controls.

I will first make some simple examples with this UI. Then i will try to interface the javascript with PHP-MYSQL Application. I am just Thinking Loud. This makes a Globally Distributed Process Control Possible. :~) . You can Use html-js-php-msql. You can use ajax-python-perl too.

This is a Crude Costing Formulae based on my Ideas which is called "Gut-Feel Thumb-Rule Methodology." Even Though i am probably the only follower of this popular System, I am sure it is worth a casual Look.

Reserves are for Dry days, Employee Fund is to reduce Attrition and Layoff. I was costing the products as a Proprietor, Managing Director and as an R&D Engineer too.

This post is just to enlighten you of the intricacies involved. It is merely the Tip of the IceBerg. You will need a Spreadsheet and lot of foresight and hindsight to make a practical costing.

Management Methodology 

This rule is for products made in good numbers. Large scale production costs may go down. Custom designed products made in small numbers the price may double. The cost of Engineering and IP has not been taken to consideration. It has been covered by a 10% Research Cost.

All this assuming we make products of reasonable quality and reliability. Build a reputation by good customer service when the product fails. So this will add into the cost depending upon the organization.

The grey areas in this costing are "Sourcing quality Raw Materials and Parts". Designing and Engineering "Reliable and Robust Products" . Customer Support at site or field may be expensive and warranty too.

Better to be Honest, Transparent and build a Brand Reputation for a Long Term company Success.

Reliability of Electronic Products

I have been in Product Design, Manufacturing and Marketing of Electronic Products/components. I have also been, like many of you, a customer.

It is very important that the customer gets a Reliable, Sturdy, Usable and Dependable product. This is what makes the Good Brands which in turn add to the Company Reputation and value.

The most important is the "Direct Customer Support" when a product fails or user finds it difficult to operate.  This include Prompt Product Service and Repairs. Any laxity or high-handedness or a Ping-Pong Customer Support can cause acute Brand Blindness that could even become Hereditary. Your brand can be shunned by a Family for generations and they also propagate negative marketing.

Dictabird and the Flintstones

First time in the history of AI in the year 1994 they recreated Stone age History in the form of the Flintstones Movie. This is an Interesting Life Form. The Ancient DictaBird.



I would prefer one that that may be useful on the Desktop like the DictaBird. So an Interactive desktop communication helper in the form of a Extra-Smart bird. Like Daisy perhaps. Something Fuzzzy or with AI like

There was the time when Peedy The Talking Parrot made his appearance on my Win 95 Desktop. It was the first version of BonziBuddy. This parrot was quite dumb but did interact with inputs.

Dupey a Toy made by Dilbert develops its own intelligence and become a superhit AI toy which has emotions and can also create and design like dilbert.

Gregory G. Leedberg created Daisy for DOS which evolved to Billy on Windows. These are AI Chat Bots that brought me hours of AI flavored happiness in the year 2000.

Even though these programs serve purposes which may make them seem like toys, the artificial intelligence developed to support these programs is actually quite advanced. The goal is to advance this AI within these programs, so that it may eventually be applied to real-world problems.

The Success of the LED Lamp

The White LED Lamp is a Success today, more and more firms are manufacturing them. Millions are using it and is moving forward taking over the slots once occupied by CFL Lamps.

Inverting Amplifier - Op-Amp Designs

This is an Op-Amp Tutorial. Here you see an Operational Amplifier in the Inverting Amp configuration. I have used OP07 as it is almost like an ideal Opamp. The ultra low offset is the best part. Then not really, CA3140 has a Tera Ohm Input resistance but offset not the best. ICL7650 approaches an Ideal Op-Amp and chopper stabilized.

These parameters are good for DC Amps. Sensors, Strain Gauge Bridges Signal Conditioning need them. Then when you want a better AC performance, you can use a LF353 with a nice slew rate. Here the DC merits are not of much use.

Input Impedance of this module is Ri as pin 2 is at virtual ground, the opamp with feedback tries to maintain pin 2 and 3 at same potential pin 3 is at 0V hence pin 2 is at virtual ground. Clamping diodes protect OpAmp, Rf + Ri is between 5kE and 1ME as an opamp may be able to drive around say 5mA max

Widgets from delabs

There are Web widgets related to learning electronics and also demonstrating the subtle aspects of Product Design Technologies. This blog also has the widgets made by delabs from the iGoogle days, around 2005. These demonstrate solutions for improving usability in devices.

EE Widgets of delabs - Here i am moving traditional html pages content into an expression-engine cms in the multi-site mode. In this site i have managed to give it a skin with images using an incremental css file. The old Site which has moved many times is here dapj gadgets.

After Google Plus service ended, i am reducing the dependence on external services. I have also removed these projects from github, the code i created more than a decade ago is outdated now. It is also better we depend on ourselves and open-source projects.

Small and Big Bizness

If you are a small company you have an ability to grow and improve as adrenaline is working. Many large companies due to inertia lose their core skills; because they become complacent. They shrug off customers and responsibilities. They soon become careless and slovenly, Then they start stepping on others toes.

Small and Big Bizness

Soon they seem to only struggle to maintain their virtual positions by various adjustments. Later corruption and red tape sets in. The small company remains agile, attentive and proactive and slowly gets better market share, but they have the disadvantage of cash flow and contacts.

The conclusion is big and small both are at par. The Big ones have to consolidate, reform, hive off and be sensible. The Small ones has to be ever look out for opportunities left open. There are good sensible big corporations who know this, they work with a sense of social responsibility, try to become like them, for they know the secret to be big and agile.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention. Fortuity is the Father of Innovation.

e-Gram - Secure and Green Communication

When we send a snail mail or receive them, there is not much of spam involved. This is because of the cost of the postage stamp and cover. Even then some unwanted snail mail may come in rarely.

e-Gram - Secure and Green Communications

 The cost of sending an e-mail should fall on the sender, not the receiver or the mail transport system. A way - more like 100 free sending per day, above that nominal charges. This may not work well as most of this spam is sent unconventionally. If routers and servers get smart, they can block spam, then it may be like charging a Toll on the Data Highway. That may choke the net for normal users.

Cloud Computing the Cerebral Six Pack

Grid computing among servers is fine. But the concept of networking unused computers and using that for crunching large numbers is not practical. This is mainly because it is not green (power consumption). Such ideas are not economical for the purpose served. Not Sustainable.

What we need is like a Class AB Audio Amplifier. Deliver Power on demand, or scale up/down (hardware switching) on demand, efficiently. This is only possible in client-server systems. Cloud Computing is the way. The clients are Low Power Multi-Media Terminals. The Modules in the Servers can turn on, as demand increases, as more people login or compute more.

Iridium Reuse - Y2K Fables

The www is always hungry for more, the present infrastructure of iridium could be used to enhance performance of www, it may not make profits but it will sure help in the maintenance and coordination of servers and speed up the web which may benefit all in general.

I heard that iridium satellites may be brought down. It must be fun putting it up on the first place and then bringing it down, electronic stuff will on their own stop after some time, so why bring it down, and when it is still up there in the sky why not use it for some other purpose than intended, that way you can save the cost of bringing it down !

Differential Amplifier - Op-Amp Designs

A very simple one op-amp diff amp. This amplifies the difference between two inputs Vp and Vn the low impedance of this configuration is a drawback, but can be used in analog computing. Optimum VCC VDD can be +12/-12. AC signals common to Vp and Vn are canceled by this configuration.

Use a capacitor like 10nF plastic from pin 2 to 3 or across R2 to make circuit stable. For AC applications use LF351 TLO71 as they have good slew rate and also are FET inputs. For AC applications use a capacitor (1uF) in series with Ri to block DC Components.

If output impedance of a point is a high value then connecting another circuit at that point will load it, resulting in malfunction or error. Buffers are used as interface between circuits.

Low impedance of an output means it can source/sink lot of current, when you need 2 opamps use LF353 or TL072 which are dual opamps.

A non-inv FET input is the best buffer, for inverting buffer use high R values. Using very high R values like 2.2M or higher requires a glass epoxy PCB and guard rings around pin 2, 3 to prevent leakage currents on the PCB reaching the PINs.

Also moisture and dust has to be prevented by using RTV coating or Varnish. Use 78L05 and 79L05 for the dual supply required by this circuit.

Inverting Amp   -   Vout = -1 * Vin

Non-Inverting Amp   -   Vout = Vin

Vary the Millivolt Source by just hovering your Mouse pointer over the Two Buttons (Increment and Decrement). If you leave the mouse pointer on a button, the variation will pick up speed. Set a Value of your choice, positive or negative, you can set from -199.9mV to +199.9mV. Note the Output values on both the DVMs on the right (digital Volt Meter) in a Table. Repeat this for at-least 7 readings of both polarities. Jot the Formula below in your book and relate it to your table.

The Input Impedance of this module is very high and is symmetric. This circuit can be used for strain gauges and for four wire measurements. If inputs are in mV use OP07. The merit is that it uses only 2 OpAmps yet has high differential Input Impedance.

The Outputs of Opamps are low impedance but still have limits they cannot drive more than a few mA of Current into the Load. If low ohmic value loads are to be applied use external transistors as amplifiers. If inputs Vn-Vp are floating, outputs may be random or oscillating, it is good to have a bias network of 10M resistors to a potential even zero or common, this enables some Vout when input floats.

This is a demo of the popular 555 timer. you can try out the project on this page by a javascript simulation. Press the Red button below to turn on the circuit press it again to turn off. The 555 can source (LED2) or Sink (LED1) upto 200mA.  If you are starting with electronics, this is the first step. So do it now ! Do-It-Yourself.

It can even drive a small motor or lamp with diodes added to protect from inductive kickback.Vary Ra, Rb and Ct with the controls given and see the change of frequency, period and duty cycle.

Human Beings are helped or hampered by many types of Microbes. From the Sub-Microbe virus to animal like Bacterium and plant like Fungi.

An Affordable Portable Electronic Microbe Detector using Mass Spectrometry; may be very useful for Small HealthCare Centers and Homes. If a Person Breathes into an adapter in the instrument, it should show a simple analysis of the Air Microbe Levels. It can also be used for CleanRoom Air Purity Indication.

Materials and Inventory Management

The Inventory of a Firm should be Open within an Organization. Searching with a browser, Integrateable with departmental webware/intranet. With a very easy readable non-programmer friendly API.

Components Parts Kits and Materials

The Search must be based on Multiple Keywords, Filters or Tags. Dormant Inventory and Parts/Equipment/Furniture not on any live project anymore, Excess Inventory and Obsoleted Parts due to Tech Advancement; should be flagged. This enables other departments to use it, consume it for Maintenance or Research projects or integrate into new designs if not-obsolete.

Materials and Inventory Management

If found to be valueless, damaged or worn-out by all departments and responsible engineers, then inventory should be sold or given away. The Employees can be the first customers for an inhouse Corporate Garage Sale. An un-organized, complexly-computerized and non-transparent/blocked Stores will end up in a Flea Market.

All Things Internet - TCP-IP

This is in continuation of the write up earlier called a new OS. All peripherals should have a URL, all components like keyboard, mouse, harddisk, CDROM drive, monitor also should have URLs, like mouse can be /mouse then harddisk can be /hdd. if you need two mice then /mouse1and /mouse2.

Computer Data Interface

All except the cpu are peripherals, a harddisk bought from the market will be just tcp/ip enabled no drivers, no software, place it on the desk and log in with your /hdd from your /keyboard. the hdd will allow unlimited optic lan logins. The cpu can be a no connector crystal ball like device with ferrite underside for power. and will be at the corner of the desk looking like a paperweight and do the job of a smart router. Most of the devices will be talking to each other even without the cpu being aware of that.

Apply TCP-IP to one and all - y2k

The peripherals will be same for any OS any Hardware, you can even keep one cpu running linux and another win2k beside each other and all work seamlessly. In case you need more view get a tcp/ip optic monitor from the next table and log on and you will have double the view area, and while you are at it the guy from the next table will take back the monitor you would not even notice.

Online Web Operating System

Web-OS and HandHeld Terminal - If the server is the cloud and the VT-100 Terminal is your Tablet computer. Technically the OS is in the Cloud. Think about it.

The term Web-OS was coined by me as early as 2002 in a Post called "The Browser is the Operating System" and In "Nomadic Computing" with the small image show far below.

First Offline Slow Bloated Apps prone to virus and crashes are going to be phased out in a few decades in favor of Web-Apps. But in 20-30 Years the Desktop OS is also going to Commence its Departure.

I foresee it is likely that future Hand Held Computers and PC may not have an OS at all. The GUI will stream down from a Friendly Neighborhood Computer Services Provider CSP.The Keystrokes and Mouse

Move OS to Cloud

Clicks will Stream Up to the CSP Servers. The CSP Server Farm of Mac-OSX, Linux or Free BSD will serve the GUI and monitor your keystrokes. So no OS means no Virus, no updates, no crashes, and unlimited hard disk space at server. You can install your programs remotely and burn your data on CD or Thumb-Drive locally. I think roughly 35% of productivity loss is due to updates, virus, re-installation and Upgrades. This can be brought down to 5% or even less. :~)

The best part of the 555 is that it has an voltage detection. It has a Versatile Logic which is defined by voltage comparators. The ability to loop it like an opamp for feedback makes it the first "Programmable" Mixed Chip. In short it make an ideal building block.

Signetics made the 555, This is one IC that is like a E-LEGO, this along with Op-Amps and other components can make many interesting projects. On some pins like Control Voltage it responds to analog signals and on Reset and Output the signals are Digital like. The 7555 a CMOS version consumes lower power and oscillates at higher frequencies.
